Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS)’s biggest problem will be substantially abated once new traffic light intersections are completed by 2024.
MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said the traffic light intersection that is currently being built will solve traffic congestion in Samarahan.
“The government will also build a new expressway from the Samarahan Bridge towards the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), crossing the Sarawak River,” he said.
He said the government will upgrade and improve the road in Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa as well.
“The upgrade also includes the road from 9th Mile, Jalan Kuching-Serian to the roundabout near the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) and Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas),” he said.
He added that the ongoing projects have created inconveniences for road users and hoped that everyone is patient.
“The serious and massive traffic jam problems in Kota Samarahan at peak hours on working days must be resolve.
“The problem has been around for far too long and it creates stress and tensions on the commuters,” said Minos.
He said if the problem is not solved, the development and progress in Kota Samarahan will be stalled.
He then expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for the approval of the project as well as allocating funds for it.
“This project is a ‘live saver’ for everyone who is living in the Samarahan area,” he said.
The new traffic light intersections will replace the three roundabouts in the MPKS jurisdiction and another two roundabouts under the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).
Minos was pleased with the progress of the construction.
“MPKS is pleased and happy with the contractor and hope that the projects will be done on time,” he said.
